What do monkeys, zombies, aliens, vampires, mummies, robots, dinosaurs, marines, secret agents and gingerbread men have
in common? Absolutely nothing but they are all brought together once again for the most wondrous of gaming experiences that
is Timesplitters. Being the third in the series, Free Radical had a lot to live up to having the hugely popular Timesplitters
2 looming behind them. And unfortunately fans of the previous games may not feel that they have managed to get that level
of greatness they reached with the previous instalment.
The story mode once again follows Sgt. Cortez on his quest to find the time crystals across many different time periods
and save the whole of humanity’s history from the wrath of the evil Timesplitters once again. Interesting features like
players being able to meet up with past and future versions of themselves and fight along side them adds a spark to the game
and also a full 2 player co-op mode. But unfortunately the story mode seems much easier compared to previous instalments.
The game regains itself somewhat with its ever-popular challenge mode. With fantastically original ideas such as monkey
curling and remote controlled cat racing (yes you read that right) players will be kept amused for a long time. Then along
side this there is the Arcade League in which players must compete in pre-set arcade matches against bots to gain gold trophies
and gain unlockables. Like the story mode, both these modes seem easier than the last game and will not keep players addicted
to them quite as long.
But as always the game shines with its multiplayer mode. With addition of online play, players can participate in frantic,
16 player matches online or using system links. All matches are fully customisable and feature 14 levels and over 150 playable
characters to choose from, including old favourites from previous games and some new faces. There is also new weapons and
the inclusion of vehicles that just manage to keep this mode new and original. So like other instalments, this is a great
game to pull out and play with your mates from time to time.
Finally with tons of unlockable cheats, characters, game modes and levels and one of the most in depth map
editors created for a FPS with and online map-share facility, this game should keep gamers playing for a long time. But unfortunately
just not as long as previous Timesplitters adventures.
