The Mobian's interview with creator of Girl Power and BSTHMC, Ben 'Blue Rush' Breaden!

Arch: Do you have any influences when spriting, creating backgrounds or writing your comic?

Blue Rush: That's a pretty tough queston... when I'm spriting, I can't recall any influences except for perceptive thought. I don't like to make sprites so unique that they end up not looking like Sonic characters and I can still make good designs that I am proud of. Ben the hedgehog was influenced entirely by my personality, however. When I'm creating backgrounds, my only influence is thinking about what kind of zones haven't really shown up in Sonic games, or what would just be generally useful. When it comes to Girl Power, I can't say I do have any influences.. I don't even write scripts, I just make the entire thing up as I go along.

A: On the matter of Girl Power, I know it's been asked before, but what was your thought process when deciding to use an all-female cast?

BR: Frankly it was inspired by the fact that I am better with female characters in most games I've played. For example, Amy in Sonic R, Sonic Battle and Sonic Adventure, Cammy or Chun Li in Street Fighter 2 or other games they have appeared in etc. Also, just because I was curious as to what it would be like if the world was saved and no male was responsible.

A: Which of the cast do you find easiest, or more exciting/interesting to write for? Separately, which character(s) do you think need(s) a little work?

BR: Definietely the dark side, because each of them are more unique than the hero side, and that has been said by others too.I think that I do need to emphasise the individual qualities of the hero side except for Alex and Cream, because in the chapter where they were transported to Ice Mountain to fight Elec and Rouge, it became clear that Alex was a natural leader, and a martial arts expert, and that Cream is a downright pussy!

A: How do you feel about events in the recent Spriter's Choice awards and people's attitudes on the STCOSSCACC?

BR: I strongly resent any of my characters being referred to as "recolours," even though, apparently, only one person voted for Ben the hedgehog as best recolour. Other than that, there isn't much else to say except for congratulations to all the award winners and keep up the good work! The people on STCOSSCACC are friendly, no doubt about that. I have edgy opinions on the way X3 reacts to some people's work, I don't understand how anybody could be unconcsiously and/or naturally harsh, some people do get very offended.

A: Do you have any projects planned for the near future?

BR: Oh-ho, you bet I do! I have a brand new sprite comic that is set to begin when I have finished the full version sprite sheets of all starring characters. It's aptly named Xamalgamation, it stars only my fan characters in all of their new looks. The main character is Xalo the fox, and the comic is about a brand new enemy, and the origin of Xalo's fusion power, which is called Xamalgamation. It's going to be an exciting, epic series of tales!

A: Finally now,how pleased are you, overall, with sprites, comics and backgrounds you've produced in the past?

BR: I am not pleased with the minimal attention Girl Power is getting on STCOSSCACC, and I don't know what I can possibly do about it other than advertise. I do confess I have been extremely lazy with Girl Power lately, I just seem to have lost my motivation, and that's probably because it's being overlooked so much. As for sprites, well what can I say? I'm proud of all of my fan characters and my backgrounds, even though I haven't made that many of the latter. I will continue to let my imagination run wild and I can't wait until I finish all my characters sprite sheets to show everyone at STCOSSCACC, and the Team Dark forum.

A: Well, thanks awesomely much for the interview, Ben, and I hope your future of spriting and writing goes as great as it possibly can!

BR: Just don't go mad when I become the new Mr. Optimistic! ;)
